Novartis Research and Development (R&D)

Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD)

The Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD) in Singapore aims to discover novel treatments and prevention methods for major tropical diseases. In developing countries where these diseases are endemic, the Novartis Group intends to make treatments readily available to poor patients without profit. The discovery technology is state-of-the-art, and the scope of activities ranges from target discovery through screen development and compound optimization. The Institute looks to recruit the best scientists in the world and, as a major center of excellence, to offer exceptional teaching and training opportunities for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.

The long-term aim of Novartis is to help reduce the overall level of affliction caused by tropical diseases and, ultimately, to improve the prosperity of developing countries.

NITD research projects focus mainly on dengue fever, tuberculosis and malaria, with a possibility to expand research efforts to other disease areas in later years.

Value of medicines

The cost of a drug must be viewed in terms of value provided to patients.
